THE WORLD'S ELITE ARE HEADING TO BERLIN: NINE TOP TEN PLAYERS

Grand Slam atmosphere and Wimbledon flair at the Steffi-Graf Stadium. The BERLIN TENNIS OPEN by HYLO are setting new standards: Nine Top Ten players will compete in the capital from 14 to 22June. There has never been more world-class players in one place ...!

Prior to the start of Wimbledon (30 June), the best of the best will gather at the Hundekehlesee, determined to make a statement against the fierce competition. The spectators can therefore look forward to high-level duels featuring renowned protagonists. 17 of the Top 18 players have registered to play at the tournament.

 

Seven Grand Slam champions with twelve major titles

 Heading the remarkable Berlin draw is none other than leading topplayer, Aryna Sabalenka, and alongside,crowd favourite, Coco Gauff (WTA No.2), who both consistently deliver thrilling matches. The record, by the way, iseven: 5-5. It would, of course, also be THE dream final on 22 June at theSteffi Graf Stadium …!

 'I am very much looking forward to playing in Berlin this year. And Ireally do hope for a great grass-court season,' said Sabalenka, who, in the previous season, amongst others, triumphed at the US Openand Australian Open. Notably, she won the finals in New York and Melbourneagainst opponents who will also be in Berlin: Jessica Pegula (WTA No. 3)and Zheng Qinwen (WTA No. 7). The Chinese player is also the Paris 2024Olympic champion. Another Olympic gold medallist, Belinda Bencic, will also be competing at the BERLIN TENNISOPEN by HYLO.

 

During the tournament days, Berlin will become an unofficial fifth major

Gauff is the current WTA World Champion: at the end of last year, she captured the title in Riyadh – it was her second major success after winning her 'home tournament', the US Open, in 2023. 'I alwayslook very much forward to playing in Berlin,' Gauff stressed and added: 'I am so excited to return to Berlin in June and kick off my grass-court season at such a great event.'

Just last Saturday, the powerhouse player from Delray Beach, Florida reached the final of the WTA 1000 event in Rome, where she lost to Jasmine Paolini.The world number four was the first Italian in 40 years to succeed in winning' at home' at the Centro Olimpico. Now Paolini is eager to make her debut at the famous site of the LTTC 'Rot-Weiß' Berlin.

Tennis fans can look forward to a total of seven Grand Slam champions with a combined twelve major titles! Wimbledon winners, Elena Rybakina and Marketa Vondrousova, are also set to appear. The former world number one, NaomiOsaka, who has won four major coups so far, and Emma Raducanu, the2021 US Open champion, have each received a wildcard. 'To be competing against such a world-class field right before Wimbledon is a huge opportunity and I can hardly wait to make an impact in Berlin,' Osaka announced. German number one from Hamburg, Eva Lys, will also participate in the event thanks to a wildcard.

 

Andrea Petkovic, Director of Excitement of the BERLIN TENNIS OPEN by HYLO, is also well aware of the exceptional depth of the world-class field: 'It seems everyone wants to be in Berlin. I can't remember the last time we had a line-up this strong.' Laughing, she added: 'I am just glad that I don't have to compete anymore!'

The Danish jewellery brand, OLE LYNGGAARD COPENHAGEN, will prov idea precious and valuable trophy for the winner of the singles competition. And this is what the trophy, which all is about, in addition to world ranking points and a record prize money of US Dollar 1.1 million, at the BERLIN TENNIS OPEN by HYLO looks like: an elephant made from high-quality bronze, balancing a tennis ball on its head with its trunk. The trophy design matches the one which will be awarded at its sister tournament inBad Homburg the following week, reinforcing the identity of the prestigiousGerman grass-court season. The fine jewellery brand, which is also the purveyor to the Danish royal family, manufactured the 3.5-kilogram, 40-centimetre-tall piece of art.

 

Like all of the company's products, the trophy was handcrafted by mastergoldsmiths at the company's in-house workshop near Copenhagen. 'The elephant represents loyalty, strength and courage, making it a perfect fit for Berlin and the sport of tennis,' explained CEO, Søren Lynggaard. 'Thetennis ball at the end of its trunk symbolises how uniqueness and surprise often arise from a certain playfulness,' said Lynggaard. The family company, based in northern Copenhagen, was founded by the goldsmith and designer, OleLynggaard, in 1963 and is now run by the second generation, his daughter,Charlotte, and son, Søren Lynggaard.
