Thursday’s action at the BERLIN TENNIS OPEN by HYLO 2025 delivered plenty of surprises in the second half of the Round of 16. Two of the world’s best players, Aryna Sabalenka and newly crowned French Open champion Coco Gauff (USA), took center stage at Steffi Graf Stadium. While Sabalenka fought her way into the quarterfinals, Gauff’s first appearance on Berlin grass this year turned out to be her last: she faced a stunning straight-sets loss to qualifier Xinyu Wang (CHN).

World No.1 Sabalenka survives Masarova challenge after resumed match

Those expecting a quick finish from world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka against qualifier Rebeka Masarova (SUI) after the match was suspended Wednesday were proven wrong. Sabalenka had taken the first set 6-2 before the match was halted due to darkness and slippery conditions caused by humidity. When play resumed Thursday, Masarova stepped up her game and pushed her opponent to a second-set tiebreak. Sabalenka narrowly edged it 7-6(6) to seal her spot in the next round.

Rybakina awaits Sabalenka in quarter final showdown

Sabalenka will now face grass-court expert Elena Rybakina (KAZ), who overcame Katerina Siniaková (CZE) 6-4, 7-6(5) in a tense battle. The 2022 Wimbledon champion becomes the sixth player to book a place in the quarterfinals and now faces her toughest challenge yet in the world number one.
