What a start to the round of 16 at the BERLIN TENNIS OPEN by HYLO 2025!

Spectators in the Steffi GrafStadium witnessed five players from the world’s top 10 competing in fourincredibly exciting singles matches on Center Court this Wednesday. The first players have secured their tickets for the quarter-final and in a spectacular way! The epic showdown between Liudmila Samsonova and last year’s championJessica Pegula (USA) has already earned its place in the tournament’s history.

First quarter-final ticket goesto Paula Badosa – Navarro out

The first spot in the quarter-finals was secured by world No. 10 Paula Badosa (ESP), who edged out Emma Navarro (USA, WTA No. 9) 7-6(2), 6-3 after a tightly contested first set. Badosa’s opponent in the last eight will be determined on Thursday, when world No. 2 Coco Gauff (USA) faces qualifier Xinyu Wang (CHN).

In doubles, the American duoCaroline Dolehide/Sofia Kenin claimed the first quarter-final spot, defeating the Czech team of Katerina Siniakova and Marketa Vondrousova 6-3, 7-6(4) in 1:22 hours.

Ons Jabeur pulls off anothersurprise, beats Jasmine Paolini

Crowd favorite Ons Jabeur (TUN) continued her impressive run on Berlin’s grass courts, celebrating her first top-five victory since Wimbledon 2023. Having entered the main draw as a lucky loser, the 2022 Berlin champion faced world No. 5 and fourth seed Jasmine Paolini (ITA) in the round of 16, and stunned her with a commanding 6-1, 6-3win. Jabeur is now qualified for the quarter-finals.

In doubles action, Shnaider and Andreeva put up a strong fight but narrowly lost to Babos and Stefani (BRA),6-4, 4-6, 5-10. Babos and Stefani will now face wildcard duo Ons Jabeur (TUN)and Paula Badosa (ESP) in the next round.

In the third doubles match of the day, tensions ran high on Court 1. Giuliana Olmos

(MEX) and Alexandra Panova took the opening set 7-6(5), but No. 4 seeds Asia

Muhammad (USA) and Demi Schuurs(NED) struck back with a dominant 6-1 in the second. Muhammad and Schuurs went on to win the match tie-break and became the third doubles team to reach the quarter-finals.

Samsonova defeats Pegula 6-7(6),7-5, 7-6(6) in 3 hours 21 minutes

What an intense battle between Liudmila Samsonova and Jessica Pegula! The BERLIN TENNIS OPEN champions of 2021and 2024 fought a breathtaking duel lasting 3 hours and 21 minutes. It was a match of equals, with neither player giving an inch. In the end, Samsonova narrowly emerged victorious, overturning a one set deficit to win 6-7(6), 7-5,7-6(6).

Sabalenka vs. Masarova suspendedafter one set

The day concluded with the long-awaited appearance of world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka against Rebeka Masarova(SUI). After a long delay, the match finally got underway at around 7:45 pm. Sabalenka won the first set 6-2 in just 39 minutes but the match was then suspended due to unsafe, slippery court conditions. Play will resume onThursday.

Following Wednesday’s thrilling matches, the high-caliber round of 16 action continues on Thursday. Among the highlights is the first appearance of world No. 2 Coco Gauff (USA), who will face qualifier Xinyu Wang (CHN).
