QUALIFYING ROUNDS FOR THE BERLIN TENNIS OPEN BY HYLO HAVE CONCLUDED
The BERLIN TENNIS OPEN by HYLO qualifiers concluded on Sunday with six more matches. It is now clear which players have secured their spots in the main draw of the WTA 500 tournament.
The first surprise of the day came with the injury-related withdrawal of Anastasia Potapova, allowing her opponent Caroline Dolehide (USA) to advance to the main draw without contest. Katerina Siniakova also secured her ticket with a dominant 6-4, 6-2 win over Ashlyn Krueger (USA). Meanwhile, on Court 1, Katarzyna Kawa and Viktoriya Tomova engaged in a tightly contested match with several shifts in momentum. Ultimately, Tomova triumphed in three sets: 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Ella Seidel falls to Rebeka Masarova, Ons Jabeur advances as lucky loser
Unfortunately, the second round of qualifying marked the end of the road for Germany’s Ella Seidel. After a stunning victory over last year’s finalist Anna Kalinskaya on Saturday, she couldn’t overcome the strong play of Rebeka Masarova (Switzerland) on Sunday, despite a competitive first set. Masarova advances to the main draw with a 7-5, 6-1 victory.
Ons Jabeur (Tunisia), the 2022 Berlin champion, moves into the next round as a lucky loser despite her three-set loss (1-6, 6-3, 0-6) to China’s Xinyu Wang. In a close match, 2022 Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin (USA) secured her place in the main draw with a hard-fought 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 victory over Ajla Tomljanovic (Australia).
Eva Lys, the last remaining German in the singles, plays on Monday
On Monday, all eyes will be on Eva Lys. The Hamburg native will face Spain’s Paula Badosa (WTA No. 9) in her first-round match. Also scheduled for Monday: world No. 6 Mirra Andreeva vs. Magdalena Frech (Poland) and Marta Kostyuk (Ukraine) vs. Emma Navarro (USA, WTA No. 10).
First doubles pairings set for Monday
The first doubles matches are also scheduled for Monday. Jiang Xinyu and Fang-Hsien Wu (China/Taipei) will take on the experienced team of Tereza Mihalikova and Olivia Nicholls. The American duo of Ashlyn Krueger and Jessica Pegula will face Daria Kasatkina and Donna Vekic (Australia/Croatia).
Tuesday sees a clash between the Olympic champion and a Wimbledon winner
On Tuesday, four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka (Japan) will face Liudmila Samsonova in the round of 16. Also on the schedule: 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina (Kazakhstan) versus Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng (China, WTA No. 5). Australian Open champion Madison Keys (USA, WTA No. 7) will make her tournament debut against Marketa Vondrousova (Czech Republic).
Aryna Sabalenka set for Centre Court debut on Wednesday
On Wednesday and Thursday, world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and world No. 4 Jasmine Paolini (Italy) will kick off their campaigns.
Last year’s winner Jessica Pegula (USA, WTA No. 3) will also play her first match in Berlin this year on Wednesday. French Open champion Coco Gauff (USA, WTA No. 2) will begin her grass season on Thursday, facing the winner of the match between Daria Kasatkina (Australia) and Xinyu Wang (China).
