MARKETA VONDROUSOVA DEFEATS ARYNA SABALENKA

She secures a spot in the final of the BERLIN TENNIS OPEN by HYLO – on Sunday, she will face Xinyu Wang!

The final of the BERLIN TENNIS OPEN 2025 by HYLO on Sunday is set: Marketa Vondrousova (CZE) will play against qualifier Xinyu Wang (CHN)! It is another big surprise of this tournament that none of the nine top-ten players who entered have reached the final in Berlin.

This year marked Aryna Sabalenka’s first semifinal loss after six consecutive semifinal wins. And this one hurts especially. As the world number one, she wanted to finally win her first grass-court title at the BERLIN TENNIS OPEN by HYLO 2025. But her run ended in the semifinal against former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova (CZE). The Czech, currently ranked No. 164 in the WTA rankings, defeated the leader 6-2, 6-4. It was the first meeting between Sabalenka and Vondrousova this year and their eighth overall. In their head-to-head, Vondrousova now evens the score with four wins and four losses.

Vondrousova’s first final since her Wimbledon victory in 2023

On Sunday, Vondrousova will play her first final since winning Wimbledon 2023, where she defeated Ons Jabeur (TUN). Already in the Berlin semifinal, she set a BERLIN TENNIS OPEN record: never before had a player with such a low ranking reached the semifinals — now she has even made it to the final! „Aryna is a great player who really pushed me. I just tried to play as many balls as possible. I’ve enjoyed every match here in Berlin and will try to enjoy the final tomorrow,” said Vondrousova after the match.

Qualifier Wang sensationally follows Vondrousova into the final

Tomorrow, Vondrousova will face Chinese player Xinyu Wang, who sensationally made it to the final as a qualifier, knocking out one favorite after another on the way. She won in qualifying against Ons Jabeur (TUN), in round one against Daria Kasatkina, in the round of 16 against French Open champion Coco Gauff (WTA No. 2, USA), in the quarterfinals (via walkover) against Paula Badosa (ESP), and today she defeated Liudmila Samsonova, BERLIN TENNIS OPEN champion 2021, 6-4, 6-1.

For the Chinese player, this is her first ever WTA final and the best result ever achieved by a player from China in Berlin. Wang visibly enjoyed her success and promised to celebrate with her family on Saturday despite playing the final on Sunday. “If not today, when should I celebrate?” she said in an interview. “If I lose the final tomorrow, I won’t celebrate anymore,” she added with a smile.

Doubles rematch: Mihalikova and Nicholls defeat Muhammad and Schuurs to reach Berlin final

In the only doubles semi final of the day, Tereza Mihalíková (SVK) and Olivia Nicholls (GBR) once again faced Asia Muhammad (USA) and Demi Schuurs (NED), a rematch of the Indian Wells final earlier this year. This time, the Slovak-British duo won 6-2, 6-3 and advanced to the Berlin final. There, they will face the experienced Italian pair Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini. The 2025 French Open champions advanced directly to the final after the exit of Paula Badosa and Ons Jabeur.
